(Philadelphia, PA) September 22, 2008: In keeping with the Grand Polemarch's "National Call To Service Initiatives", the fraternity announced an aggressive initiative, which moves service into action by calling on all members to enthusiastically engage with their Alumni and Undergraduate chapters in the Kappa Voter Action Network. "The most civic responsibility of an active, engaged and informed citizen in a democracy is to participate in the democratic process through the ballot," Grand Polemarch Dwayne M. Murray said in announcing the details of the initiative. "As leaders in our communities, we as men of achievement have a duty to motivate every citizen to participate in the election process." The Kappa VAN is a three-step action plan, which includes: Voter Registration, Voter Education and Voter Participation. This initiative is being organized in support of the Big50Vote.com, which encourages citizens of all political affiliations and independents to join in the political process. It is under that nonpartisan umbrella, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity is asking each chapter to incorporate the following 3 essential actions into their 2008 political Awareness programs, ahead of the Presidential Election: 1. Voter Registration All Chapter members should serve as examples by registering to vote. Chapters should distribute registration forms and hold voter registration informational seminars as well as join with other community based groups conducting non-partisan voter registration drives. 2. Voter Education Chapters should organize and host candidate forums; read and discuss the Help America Vote Act with others and Support the efforts of non-partisan groups. 3. Voter Participation National "Call to Service" On Election Day, November 4th, chapters should organize senior citizen transportation pools; conduct bring a friend or family member to the polls initiatives and volunteer or voter protection which includes poll watchers and signing up as election officials.
